“Surround yourself with people who push you, who challenge you, who make you laugh, who make you better, who make you happy.“

TLDR; Good morning and welcome to your 2-minute dose of happiness. Today we speak to the value of consistently working on your own awareness and the commitments necessary to succeed.
Gratitude: Focus on being present along with your achievements and gratitudes. Self-Awareness: Are you in denial? A tough but valuable question to ask yourself. Awareness: How’s your relationship with your “inner roommate”? i.e., your thoughts?

Our lives consist of only one moment that matters – the present. When we constantly stay stuck in the past it is likely because we have some incomplete experience preventing us from moving forward.
We can be stuck by personal failures, arguments with loved ones, professional failures and more.
The issue is that as time continues to elapse the accuracy of the past experience becomes less. One benefit of the human mind is that we are in control of our thoughts and that by practicing meditation we can rewrite our brain.
I’m not asking you to forget the past. I’m suggesting that by making the present more about gratitudes and achievements so that when the present becomes the past, which happens every second, we rewire it from a much happier disposition.
My experience with Anthony J. Yeung’s three steps to improve your self-awareness.
1. Practice Mindfulness
The easiest and most cost-efficient solution is meditation, whether that’s being alone with your thoughts, listening to soothing music, taking a few deep breaths. However, I’ve started using Headspace to practice Mindfulness. I’ve found it the most effective way for me to be consistent and enjoyable practice.
2. Journal
In the past, I kept a journal that I would write in each week to keep track of my emotions, write down my gratitude’s, challenges, goals, successes of the week, anything I that comes to mind. This past month, I picked up Michael Singer’s, The Untethered Soul Guided Journal. If you’ve read his book, or even if you haven’t, I recommend you check out this guided journal. This journal leads you to a richer understanding of your relationship to your mind, emotions, and inner energies.
3. Ask Yourself a Very Simple Question
“Am I in denial?” Truth be told, I probably am. I don’t meditate as often as I should or journal quite as often. I’m chasing progression, not perfection but with awareness and I’ll find happiness.
“The first step toward change is awareness. The second step is acceptance.” – Nathaniel Branden
It’s easy to get caught up in your thoughts, or with your “inner roommate” as Michael Singer calls it. One key take away from his book that has helped me is to realize that I am not those thoughts, I am simply aware of them. With this understanding, I’m able to pull myself back from my inner roommate and not become engulfed by what they have to say. Again, our time on earth is far too short to be bothered by life’s events.
